1. Timun Mas
Long ago, a woman named Mbok Srini wanted a child very much. One day, a giant gave her a magic cucumber seed. The giant promised she would have a child, but he would take the child when she grew up. Mbok Srini agreed because she wanted a child.
Soon, a baby girl was born from a big cucumber. She was named Timun Mas. When Timun Mas grew older, the giant came to take her. Mbok Srini gave Timun Mas magical items to protect herself.
Timun Mas used the items to stop the giant. Finally, the giant fell into the mud and disappeared. Timun Mas returned home safely.
2. Lutung Kasarung
Long ago, there was a beautiful princess named Purbasari. She was kind and loved by many people. Her jealous sister, Purbararang, did not like her. She sent Purbasari away to live in the forest.
In the forest, Purbasari met a mysterious monkey named Lutung Kasarung. The monkey was actually a prince who had been cursed.

Long ago, there was a beautiful woman named Dayang Sumbi. She had a son named Sangkuriang. One day, Sangkuriang accidentally killed his father, who had turned into a dog. Dayang Sumbi became very angry and sent him away.
Many years later, Sangkuriang returned as a strong young man. He did not realize that Dayang Sumbi was his mother and wanted to marry her. Dayang Sumbi tried to stop him by giving him an impossible task: building a huge boat in one night.
Sangkuriang almost finished it, but Dayang Sumbi tricked him by making the morning come early. Angry and disappointed, Sangkuriang kicked the boat, which became a mountain.
5. Tangkuban Perahu
This myth is connected to the story of Sangkuriang. People believe that the overturned boat from Sangkuriang became Mount Tangkuban Perahu in West Java.
The mountain looks like an upside-down boat. Because of this shape, people believe it is the boat from the legend.
6. Roro Jonggrang
Long ago, a powerful prince named Bandung Bondowoso conquered a kingdom. In the palace, he saw a beautiful princess named Roro Jonggrang and instantly fell in love with her.
However, Roro Jonggrang did not want to marry the prince because he had defeated her kingdom. To avoid the marriage, she gave him an impossible challenge: he must build one thousand temples in one single night.
With the help of magical spirits, the prince quickly built hundreds of temples. As the night went on, the temples were almost finished.
Feeling worried, the princess tricked him. She asked villagers to pound rice and light fires so the sky looked like morning had come.
Believing the sun had risen, the magical spirits disappeared before finishing the last temple. Angry because he was deceived, Bandung Bondowoso cursed Roro Jonggrang and turned her into the final statue to complete the thousand temples.
7. Jaka Tarub
Long ago, a young man named Jaka Tarub lived near a quiet forest village. One day, while walking through the forest, he discovered a beautiful lake hidden among the trees.
Suddenly, he saw seven heavenly maidens descending from the sky. They removed their magical scarves and began bathing in the lake.
Curious and amazed, Jaka Tarub secretly took one of the scarves and hid it. Without the scarf, one of the maidens named Nawang Wulan could not return to heaven.
With no way to go home, Nawang Wulan eventually married Jaka Tarub and lived with him on earth. They had a peaceful life and even had a child.
However, one day, Nawang Wulan discovered the hidden scarf. Realizing the truth, she felt sad but had to return to heaven, leaving Jaka Tarub and their child behind.
8. Ande-Ande Lumut
Long ago, a handsome prince decided to disguise himself as an ordinary young man named Ande-Ande Lumut. He wanted to find a woman who loved him for his true character, not because he was a prince.
Many girls from different villages came to meet him because they had heard that he was kind and gentle.
Among them was a humble girl named Klenting Kuning. Unlike the others, she was honest, patient, and respectful.
While other girls tried to impress him with beauty and wealth, Klenting Kuning showed kindness and sincerity.
Because of her pure heart, Ande-Ande Lumut chose her as his wife. Later, he revealed that he was actually a prince, and they lived happily together.
9. Banyuwangi
Long ago, a noble woman named Sri Tanjung lived with her husband, a brave warrior. They loved each other deeply and lived happily.
One day, Sri Tanjung’s husband began to suspect that she had been unfaithful. Although she repeatedly told him she was innocent, he did not believe her.
To prove her honesty and loyalty, Sri Tanjung made a final promise. She said that if the water smelled fragrant after she jumped into the river, it would mean she was innocent.
With a heavy heart, she jumped into the river. Suddenly, the water released a sweet and fragrant smell.
The husband realized that his wife had told the truth, but it was already too late. Since that time, the place was named Banyuwangi, which means “fragrant water”.
10. Si Pitung
Si Pitung is a legendary hero from Betawi, Jakarta. He lived during a time when many poor people were treated unfairly by rich landlords and colonial rulers.
Si Pitung was known as a brave and clever man who fought against injustice. He often took money from greedy and cruel rich people.
Instead of keeping the wealth for himself, he shared the money and food with poor villagers who needed help.
Because of his courage, generosity, and kindness, many people admired him. Even today, Si Pitung is remembered as a heroic figure who defended the weak and helped the poor.
